Every Labour Day, communities across Clarendon come alive with various development projects. This year was no exception, with significant initiatives and impressive collaborations making headlines. Our Local Governance and Community Development Live Forum featured updates on these Labour Day projects and insights into the upcoming Compliance and Beauty Show.
Labour Day Projects Across Clarendon
Mayor Joel Williams provided a comprehensive overview of the various projects that occurred across Clarendon. Notably, the Frankfield community was a focal point due to its unique needs, resulting in impactful projects, including:
- Tree Planting
- Cleaning of the Police Station and Market
- Building of Sidewalks and Ramps
- A Beautiful Mural Painted
Selection and Reasoning for the Parish Project
The civic committee, which includes all twenty two (22) councillors, decided to select Frankfield for this year’s parish project. This committee focuses on community development and civic matters. They chose Frankfield, a small town in the hills, due to its unique needs and the potential for significant impact. Addressing these issues was seen as a way to benefit both the citizens and the local business community.
Notable Efforts in All Divisions
Projects were also carried out in other areas, such as Rock River, Chapleton, Northern Clarendon, and York Town. These included constructing homes for the elderly, cleaning markets, and various beautification initiatives.
From creating better living conditions for the elderly to community beautification projects, each councillor worked diligently within their divisions. Highlights included:
Mineral Heights Division: The collaboration spearheaded by Councillor Collin Coke with projects like building a concrete bathroom in Cockpit Basic School and creating green spaces.
Efforts in Hayes and Other Areas: Cleaning, painting, and constructing ramps were common themes, ensuring that community spaces are safe, accessible, and visually appealing.
Cockpit Citizens Association: A Model for Community Involvement
The Cockpit Citizens Association emerged as a standout example of effective community action. According to Association Secretary Esmine Thompson, the organization has been proactive despite challenges. Recent efforts saw the construction of a bathroom at the basic school, resolving longstanding water issues.
She encouraged more participation in community activities: "Communities can benefit from a whole lot of things, but persons just have to come together and no matter what, no matter how small, a group, we can always go big."
Looking Forward: The Compliance and Beauty Show
Switching gears, the forum also provided a preview of the highly anticipated Compliance and Beauty Show scheduled for May 27th. Mayor Williams passionately outlined the event's objectives, focusing on supporting local beauticians, hairdressers, and barbers by helping them achieve compliance and gain necessary certifications.
The show promises to be a grand affair with notable performers and engaging activities, affirming its goal to elevate local businesses. Highlights include:
- On-site Licensing and Public Health Permits
- Performances by I-Water, Miss TIFA, and others
- A comprehensive beauty show featuring barbers, hairdressers, and makeup artists
Encouraging Community Participation
Host, Winsome Sherrier Witter and Mayor Williams called on community members to spread the word and encourage participation. The Compliance and Beauty Show is an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to legitimize and grow their businesses, potentially boosting the local economy.
