Welcome to our special recap of Culture Corner from February to June 2024! Over the past few months, we’ve explored the vibrant tapestry of Jamaican culture through insightful conversations with inspiring guests. A special thank you to our partner, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), for their support in making these segments possible. Here’s a look back at these memorable segments:
February: Reggae Rhythms: The Evolution of Reggae Music

In celebration of Black History Month and Reggae Month, we explored the rich history and evolution of reggae music. Herbie Miller, Director and Curator at the Jamaica Music Museum, traced reggae’s journey from plantation songs to modern reggae, emphasizing its cultural impact and global reach. We also heard from Owayne 'Av8nte' McCaulsky, a JCDC festival song competition finalist, who shared his dedication to producing positive and meaningful music.
March: Exploring the Power of the Arts in Sustaining and Reinventing the Jamaican Identity

In this engaging episode, Patrick Earle and Shaurna Miller discussed the importance of the performing arts in shaping and sustaining Jamaican culture. They highlighted the preparation for national art competitions, the global influence of Jamaican arts, and the power of arts in education. The conversation also emphasized the need for innovative approaches to adapt and preserve culture.
April: Unlocking Creativity: Showcasing Visual Artistry

Winston Campbell, Visual Arts Development Specialist at the JCDC, shared his journey and insights into the evolution of visual arts in Jamaica. We explored trends in digital technologies, AI, and NFTs, and introduced top youth artist Surprise Hines and top adult artist Judith Turner. They discussed their artistic journeys and how they plan to continue preserving Jamaican culture through their art.
May: Festival Queen Parish Projects: Empowering Local Communities

Festival Queens from across the JCDC regions shared their impactful community projects. Representing Kingston and St. Andrew, Clarendon, St. Ann, and Trelawny, these queens highlighted initiatives ranging from film training workshops to providing hygiene supplies, supporting mental health, and improving mathematics education. They discussed the challenges faced, the power of collaboration, and the significant impact they’ve made in their communities.
June: Maintaining Jamaica's Cultural Identity Abroad

Dainalyn Swaby, Miss St. Elizabeth 2017 and Miss Jamaica Festival Queen 2017 shared her journey from winning the Festival Queen title to studying in the UK as a Chevening Scholar. She discussed her Jamaican roots, experiences abroad, and efforts to preserve Jamaican culture while living in a different country. Dainalyn also offered valuable advice for contestants of the upcoming Festival Queen coronations.
