Freetown Clarendon Emancipation Vigil: Unveiling Hidden Heritage & Week of Events

Welcome to Culture Corner

We are delighted to share highlights from Freetown, Clarendon Emancipation Vigil, and their incredible week of activities! It has been a week full of exciting events organized by the Citizens Association and various community-based organizations. In this episode of Culture Corner, presented in partnership with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), we also spotlight the fantastic engagements taking place across the island.


Historical Background of Freetown, Clarendon

President of the Freetown Citizens Association, Verol Dixon, shared an extensive historical background about Freetown, Clarendon. Freetown is one of Jamaica's first free villages, proudly holding the silver medal of freedom, while Sligoville holds the gold. Established in 1835 as Free Negro Village and renamed Freetown in 1840, the village has played a crucial role in Jamaica's heritage. Freetown has five churches, including the Anglican Church and the Baptist Church, and three schools.


Week of Events


Emancipation Vigil

The Emancipation Vigil held in Freetown was a pivotal event, reflecting the essence of the community’s heritage. The vigil, which saw a fantastic turnout, featured performances, dances by the International Gospel Center singers and dancers, and drumming by the Portmore Drummers. The JCDC organized the parish vigil, which included free chocolate tea, soup, and various performances that brought the community together in celebration.


Verol Dixon commended the community’s overwhelming response to the vigil. It was evident that Freetown has truly come alive, fostering unity among its residents.

Health Fair

The health fair offered vital medical services and resources, with over 300 attendees receiving care from the Clarendon Health Department. Services included blood pressure and blood sugar tests, HIV screenings, and school medicals for children. HEART NSTA Trust and VMBS were also on hand to provide their services. Trans Jamaica Highway contributed gift packages for children, featuring books, pencils, sharpeners, and crayons to help them prepare for the new school year. The day was further enriched with activities like a bounce about and trampoline, making it a well-rounded community event focused on both health and enjoyment.


Financial Literacy Workshop

The financial literacy workshop was a key highlight, supported by Sagicor Bank, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the Financial Services Commission of Jamaica, and CUNA Caribbean. They offered valuable insights on budgeting, saving, and investing. Emphasizing financial freedom as a crucial aspect of overall independence, the workshop addressed budgeting, real estate investments, and effective money management. Verol Dixon underscored the importance of financial literacy in helping community members avoid financial pitfalls and manage their resources more effectively.


Upcoming Events: Sports Day

The week of activities will conclude with the Police Youth Club Sports Day on August 3rd. Dominike Wilson, President of the Freetown Police Youth Club, shared that the day would include football, domino, and other fun games. The aim is to foster teamwork, mentorship, and a safe environment for the youth in the community.


Community Development and Future Plans

Sebrenia Aikens from the Social Development Commission (SDC) provided an update on the agency’s ongoing efforts in Freetown. Since January 2024, the SDC has been dedicated to fostering sustainable development through sports, cultural activities, and various initiatives. Key achievements include the formation of an interim executive body for the Citizens Association and active youth engagement through the Police Youth Club. Looking ahead, the SDC plans to offer value-added training in partnership with RADA and certification programs for youths through HEART NSTA Trust.


Community Engagement and Support

The week’s activities saw remarkable engagement and support from various community members and stakeholders. The collaborative effort of various agencies like the Bureau of Gender Affairs, JCDC, the Office of the Custos, the Clarendon Municipal Corporation, the Jamaica Defense Force, and the Clarendon Safety and Security Branch was evident. These organizations have been reliable pillars, always stepping in to support the community initiatives and ensuring their success.


The Importance of Heritage Preservation

Maintaining heritage preservation and fostering community activities are vital for the cultural identity and historical continuity of Freetown, Clarendon. These efforts ensure that future generations understand and appreciate their rich legacy. Activities like the Emancipation Vigil, financial literacy workshops, health fairs, and sports day play a crucial role in strengthening community bonds and promoting socioeconomic benefits.


Verol Dixon emphasized the importance of remembering the past to build a better future, connecting community members with their heritage. The enthusiastic participation in the vigil and other events showed that the residents of Freetown are committed to preserving their history and fostering a unified community spirit.
